Children and young people - Police Scotland youth engagement
Results updated 12 Mar 2020
We recognise children and young people might have different needs when contacting and interacting with the police. As part of our Summer Safety campaign, we carried out focused, national engagement with children and young people to transform how we involve young people in shaping our approaches.
As part of this engagement, we launched an online survey and attended the following festivals and events during the summer to listen to young people's feedback about the police:
- YouthBeatz, Dumfries;
- TRNSMT, Glasgow;
- Tartan Heart, Belladrum;
- Party at the Palace, Linlithgow.
In total, we received 1,609 responses:
- 1,159 online survey responses;
- 450 responses from face-to-face engagement with officers at festivals (using iPads).
We captured quantitative and qualitative feedback on how young people feel about their safety and how the police might be more accessible and approachable for them. This included insights on the following:
- Feelings of safety in own area;
- Ways the police could help;
- Preferred contact method to report crime; and
- Ways to provide feedback to the police.
A summary report of the findings can be downloaded below which also outlines what we're doing based on these insights.
Police Scotland would like to thank everyone who engaged with us during festivals and as part of our online survey. This engagement is the start of a continuous conversation with children and young people.

Overview
Police Scotland want to listen to young people and learn about their views of the police - how we're currently working and what we could do better. We want to understand the issues that affect young people and influence the way the police work, now and in the future.
As part of this engagement, we will be attending different festivals and events during the summer to talk to children and young people. This online survey complements our face-to-face engagement and encourages conversations between adults and young people. Adults and young people are invited to fill in this survey, as part of their conversations, to express their feelings and opinions in relation to young people's safety and contact with police.
How we will use the information
The information provided will allow Police Scotland to find out how we can make it easy and safe for 12 - 18 year olds to report crimes, get information or advice, and give us their feedback.
We want to shape how we do things with communities, recognising that children and young people might have different views and preferences of contact and communication than other groups.
This exercise forms part of our Summer Safety campaign and wider public engagement strategy for transforming how we engage and involve children and young people in shaping our approaches.
