Digitalisation of The Herbert Protocol Consultation

Overview

We would like your feedback on our next steps with the Herbert Protocol in Scotland.

The Herbert Protocol was introduced in Scotland around five years ago and provides support to those living with Dementia who may be at risk of going missing. Users can currently print off a copy of the Herbert Protocol form and complete the necessary details. View the Herbert Protocol Form.

The Herbert Protocol has been used many times to help police and other agencies quickly and safely locate missing people who have dementia.

Families of a person with the condition are asked to download the Herbert Protocol form and provide information such as places of importance to them, often visited places, health issues and places they have been found in the past if reported missing. Ownership and responsibility for updating the form remains with the family.

It is another example of how emergency and care services are working together to keep those with dementia safe.

Learn more about the Herbert Protocol.

We know that in many areas of the UK the Herbert Protocol form is now available in a digital format that can be retained by family or by organisations who offer an online platform where information can be stored. This can offer flexibility for those using the form.

We will use your views and feedback on the Herbert Protocol to develop and shape our approach to taking the next steps on the Herbert Protocol journey in Scotland.
