Estates Consultation: Dunbar
Results updated 24 Feb 2025
Dunbar police station is approximately 12 miles (18 mins) from Haddington, the main response hub for the area and the nearest public counter. Recently the property has been underutilised with four road policing officers and one community officer posted there. The front counter operating only one day per week.
When it became apparent that Dunbar was likely to close, Road Policing looked at alternative options and secured alternative space at Duns Police Station (Duns used to be a Road Policing base several years ago). One Road Policing officer relocated to Dalkeith Road Policing and, as part of some wider moves, four Road Policing officers relocated to Duns Police Station, with Road Policing fully exiting from Dunbar.
Lothians & Scottish Borders Road Policing Inspector, Ross Drummond, commented that the wider Road Policing model is under review nationally, but in the interim a base at Duns is working well.
J Division undertook a formal public consultation, closing on 20 September 2024.
The public consultation received 26 responses, 18% of which agreed with the proposed disposal and 76% disagreed. It was highlighted that the current underutilisation had already reduced the benefit as a community accessible and safe space. There remained however the feeling that the stations existence offers comfort to the local community and accessibility for those officers responding to traffic incidents.
